My reason for learning Japanese? Like the Himalayas: Because it's there, and because the view from the top is breathtaking (i.e. actually being to understand what you've admired for so long). I think it is one of the most beautiful and unique languages in the world.  Learning Japanese also allows  me exposure to a culture so different from my own.
